As May begins to wind down, I always feel two things at once. First is gratitude for the quiet ways Our Lady has accompanied us through the month. Second is a little nudge in my heart not to let these final days slip by unnoticed. We need to fully live the month of Mary rather than see it as a beautiful idea we admired from a distance. Remember, spending the final days of Mary’s Month with fervor brings particular grace. Use the time you have left well, whether or not you’ve been distracted, inconsistent, or late getting started. Furthermore, grace is never in a hurry, but it is always inviting us deeper.

When I say we should spend these last days of May with fervor, I do not mean we need to become dramatic or suddenly perfect. Fervor is not noise. It is not spiritual performance. Instead, what marks these final days of Mary’s month is a spirit of true and gentle fervor. It is the decision to turn again toward the Lord with a willing heart. Then, to let Mary teach us how to do that with simplicity, tenderness, and trust. She never keeps our attention for herself. Moreover, she always leads us to Jesus.

The Holy Spirit Accompanies Mary

St. Louis de Montfort put it beautifully: “When the Holy Spirit, her Spouse, has found Mary in a soul, He flies there. He enters there in His fullness.” “Marian devotion brings one of its greatest gifts: when you welcome Mary, Jesus draws near; when you honor her, the Holy Spirit moves powerfully. By intentionally entering these final days of Mary’s Month with fervor, we open ourselves to that extraordinary gift. These final days of May are a lovely time to ask for that grace. They are a wonderful opportunity to let Our Lady make more room in us for the life of God.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that after the Ascension, Mary “aided the beginnings of the Church by her prayers.” That small line says so much. Mary prays, accompanies, and intercedes. She is not distant from the life of the Church or from the ordinary needs of her children. Entering into the final days of Mary’s month with renewed fervor, she stands with us in prayer and quietly helps us remain open to the gift of the Holy Spirit. If that was true in the upper room, then it is true in our homes, our parishes, and our weary hearts now.

So how might we finish this month well? Perhaps not by doing many things, but by doing a few things with love. Pray a decade of the Rosary slowly instead of rushing through words. Place a flower before an image of Our Lady. Remember, these final days of Mary’s Month offer a new chance for fervor as you read the Annunciation or the Visitation from the Gospel and sit with it for a few quiet minutes. Whisper the Hail Mary while driving, folding laundry, or walking into a difficult conversation. Ask Mary very simply: Mother, help me say yes to Jesus the way you did.

Do Not Be Discouraged

Do not be discouraged if your month has not been especially prayerful. As you reach the final days, recall that Mary’s Month welcomes a spirit of gentle fervor. Our Lady is not keeping score. A loving mother receives the smallest sincere gesture with joy. One honest prayer offered with humility in these final days may do more in the soul than a hundred outward acts done without attention. Mary’s way is always gentle, but it is never weak. She teaches us perseverance, receptivity, and the kind of hidden fidelity that bears fruit over time.

In truth, the best way to honor Mary at the end of May is to imitate her more closely. For example, listen before reacting, and trust when the road ahead is unclear. Carry Christ into the lives of others. Also, remain near the Cross without giving way to despair. May all of us spend the final days of Mary’s Month with deeper fervor. To pray with expectant faith. Marian devotion is meant to sanctify real life, not float above it. It makes us more available to God in the very places where we are most ordinary and most needed.

So let us not coast across the finish line of this month. Instead, let us receive these final days of May as a grace. Above all, live the final days of Mary’s Month with a heart full of fervor and hope for what God wishes to do in us. She will take whatever we place in her hands—our prayers, our fatigue, our hopes for our families, our desire to love Jesus more—and she will bring it all to her Son. And that is reason enough to begin again today.
