I watched President Obama’s State of the Union address this past Tuesday (January 24, 2012), and did hear his remarks about mandating that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn eighteen. At the time, I understood this to mean that it would include home schools, which, in the State of Wisconsin are considered private schools. I also understood it to mean that the school administration ( parents) would decide when the child was ready to graduate. So, I didn’t feel any particular danger to home schooling.
However, the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) took the President’s words quite differently. Since they are the legal experts, I think their warning is worth heeding. Here’s the link to a LifeSiteNews.com article recapping the HSLDA’s call to action and their concern over the dangers to parents’ rights to educate their own children. Whether or not you home school, this is an issue to which we all must attend: http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/homeschooling-org.-protests-obama-plan-to-mandate-school-attendance

my father liberated Dachau in 1945 after getting wounded twice on the way during world war two. I am very pround of him. He is still alive and lucid so if you want to learn about the liberation of Dachau from a G. I.’s point of view you can call him anytime at 609-869-0266. His name is Tom Egan and was a sargeant at the time. My name is Gary Egan and I think your column is great. God bless and Bye-Bye

Thank you, Gary!
I can see how you’d be proud of your dad. The next time you speak with him, please thank him for his service on behalf of the Fenelon Clan. Our son was deployed twice with the National Guard; military and their families have a special place in our hearts. I may take you up on the offer to chat with your dad.
Wishing you every joy and blessing!
