Parents, take heart! A new study conducted at three North American universities – University of British Columbia, University of California Riverside, and Stanford University – has found that people who have children “report relatively higher levels of happiness, positive emotion, and meaning in life” than people who do not by means of their own choice. The findings are based on a series of surveys conducted in 1982, 1990, 1995, and 1999 with 329 participants ranging in age from 17 to 96.
I’m assuming that the study does not include consecrated persons and clergy members, who forego having biological families of their own in order to serve the spiritual families to whom they minister. So, on those days when the kids are getting into everything they shouldn’t, seem bent on killing one another, demand more than you think you can give, and drive you crazy enough to pull your hair out, remember: You’re happier than your childless peers.
