Waiting for the Light of Life
Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, but delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on his law day and night. (Ps 1:1-2)
The Psalmist promises that those who walk in God’s ways will be fruitful and prosper. The wicked, on the other hand, will be like chaff driven away by the wind.
These days it seems as though the cheaters and evildoers get away with everything while the honest and upright suffer the consequences. The rich seem to keep getting richer and the poor seem to keep getting poorer. The defenseless – the unborn, the elderly and disabled – are slaughtered and robbed of their dignity while the perpetrators go free. If I stand up for what’s right, I risk criticism, discrimination and alienation. Following God’s law isn’t that easy.
Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life, the Psalm response says. Mary, you walked in the light of life. You had the strength to stand up for what is right in all circumstances. Pray for me, that I may walk in the light of life, too.
