Waiting for a Love Story To Unfold

For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great tenderness I will take you back. In an outburst of wrath, for a moment I hid my face from you; but with enduring love I take pity on you, says the Lord, your redeemer. (Is 54:7-98)

The story of the people of Israel is a love story. Over and over again they turn from God. Over and over again he calls them back to himself. Countless times they returned his love with ingratitude and infidelity. What’s a lover to do with such unfaithfulness?

This is my love story, too. Over and over again I turn from God. Over and over again he calls me back to himself. Countless times I’ve returned his love with ingratitude and infidelity. Then, when I decide I really do need him after all, he’s hidden his face from me. I feel abandoned because he’s not responding to me in the way that I want.

Mary, you were a woman of prayer and fortitude. You never gave up, even when it seemed as though God had hidden his face from you because you were convinced that in his enduring love he would take pity on you. Pray for me, that I may have the same conviction as you; that I may wait in my state of abandonment for God to have pity on me with his enduring love.
