Waiting Like the King of the Beasts
Judah, like a lion’s whelp, you have grown up on pray, my son. He crouches like a lion recumbent, the king of beasts – who would dare rouse him? The scepter shall never depart from Judah, or the mace from between his legs, while tribute is brought to him, and he receives the people’s homage. (Gen 49:9-10)
Jacob’s prediction for Judah’s future proved true. For, out of Judah’s lineage came the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. Jacob compared Judah’s destiny with the king of the beasts. He crouches, recumbent until the right moment comes to attack his prey. This is exactly what our Lord did. He waited like a recumbent lion until the moment in time came for him to take on human flesh and attack his prey. Through Jesus’ Passion, the Evil One was conquered for all time.
What a reason to rejoice! I, too, am of Judah’s lineage. As a Christian, I belong to the Family of God and share in the victory of Jesus Christ over the Evil One. The lion has awakened..
Mary, fill my heart with joy. Like Judah, let me be assured of my heritage as a Child of God protected by his might. On Christmas Day, I want to celebrate my part in holding the scepter and worship the One who comes in glory.
