Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her. (Lk 1:38)

How beautiful and appropriate that the Feast of the Annunciation falls during Lent!

When Gabriele appeared to her, Mary asked only one question: how is this to be done? It wasn’t a question of doubting God’s power. Rather, it was a question of how she could best be God’s instrument. Once the angel explained to her how it would come to be that she conceived in her womb the Savior, she had only one response – the only response she could possibly give. “Let it be done to me according to your word.”

We could strive for the same thing this Lent. We could ask our Lord how we could best be his instrument. Then we could tell him, “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
