There is great misunderstanding about Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, even among Catholics. That can make it difficult for people to turn to her for help, even though they desperately need her motherly love.
FROM FORGIVING MOTHER: A MARIAN NOVENA OF HEALING AND PEACE
“As Catholics, we believe that when Jesus gave his mother and the apostle John to each other, he saw John as representative of all humankind. Therefore, he placed not only the apostle himself into Mary’s care, but all of us along with him. That is also true in reverse. When Jesus asked John to care for his mother, he was asking us to care for her as well. And so it is completely right that we should seek her help in times of need. From the cross, Jesus gave his mother to us as intercessor.”
Let us pray for those who do not understand Mary and her place in salvation history. Let us also pray for those who find it difficult to turn to her in time of need and to accept her motherly love.
O MOTHER, IN YOUR HOLY HEART
O Mother, in your holy heart
deeply inscribe each name
And as a sign that we are yours
write it with blood and flame.
In love and childlike gratitude
your name shall also be
Deeply inscribed within my heart
for all eternity.*
