Seeing your mother as a child of God may seem like an impossibility. Consider St. Paul. He himself admitted that he had been a terrible sinner. Yet God not only forgave him, but had an important purpose for him.
FROM FORGIVING MOTHER: A MARIAN NOVENA OF HEALING AND PEACE
“Paul went on to say, “But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life” (1 Timothy 1:16, NABRE).
I have no doubt that Paul required a great deal of God’s patience, acting as he did. Yet God showed him that patience because he had a purpose for Paul, just as he has a purpose for you as his child. And he has a purpose for your mother as his child. You may not know that purpose now, and you might never know it. But it exists. God does not create human beings randomly.”
Let us pray that all may believe that our parents are children of God regardless of their faults and shortcomings.
O MOTHER, IN YOUR HOLY HEART
O Mother, in your holy heart
deeply inscribe each name
And as a sign that we are yours
write it with blood and flame.
In love and childlike gratitude
your name shall also be
Deeply inscribed within my heart
for all eternity.*
