we can and should give serious consideration to what happened at Lepanto, especially in the present time of trials in our Catholic Church. We are, it seems, the underdog in a battle against insurmountable odds. With the widespread devastation of sexual abuse and its cover up, it can feel as though we’ve outnumbered and under-equipped. We’re not.
When we pray the mysteries of the Rosary we are in fact meditating on the culmination of God’s promises throughout both the Old and New Testaments. Making our way through the “beads” is like a grace-filled history lesson in which we review our heritage as People of God.Â
The Rosary is the mystic crown which Christian people place every day on the queenly head of the Mother of God. It is certainly the most beautiful flower of human piety and the most beautiful source of heavenly graces.
Let’s resolve to rekindle the flames and reignite devotion to the holy Rosary this month, shall we? For a sacramental that sits so light in the hand, it weighs heavily as a mighty weapon on all things evil and discouraging.
Whenever I’m tempted toward doubt, I think of Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows, whose feast we celebrate in commemoration of her faithful and courageous acceptance of Simeon’s prophecy.
The Crucifix bears our Lord’s torn and tattered Body, reminding us of his great suffering and the extreme price he paid for our salvation.
